Lesy Praha: In 2021 we planted 220,000 forest seedlings in Prague, mostly near Lítožnice
26.03.2022 20:32 | Press Release
In 2021, we planted a total of 218,192 forest tree seedlings in the capital city of Prague.
We planted trees in the existing forest stands on clearings, which arose in 2020 mainly during the necessary accidental harvesting of infested or weakened tree species, as well as originally non-forest, open areas on which new forests should grow in the future.

45% of all planted trees (98,307) traveled to vacant places in existing forests, and we planted more than half of the seedlings (119,885) in areas of future new forests. During the year, we planted the most seedlings (91,405) in a former field near the natural monument Lítožnice in eastern Prague.
We select forest tree seedlings so that their species composition corresponds as much as possible to the natural composition of the original forest stands in the given area. In the capital, therefore, we plant mainly oaks and other deciduous trees. Even in 2021, we most often planted oak seedlings (99-761 in total). They represented 46% of all planted trees. The second most numerous representative was beech (31,521), followed by linden (18,007). Deciduous species accounted for 89% of all planted trees. Of the conifers, we planted mainly fir (11,625), larch (6,680) and pine (5,368).
Our largest planting project was the establishment of a new forest near the natural monument Lítožnice, in the area between Běchovice, Dubčí and Kolodějy, in 2021. In the future, a new forest should grow here, which will shield the traffic on the planned section of the ring road around Prague from the existing development. During the spring and autumn, we planted 91,000 forest seedlings on an area of less than 10 hectares, around which we built a 3 km long fence to protect against game. The skeleton of the future green belt consists mainly of oaks (51%), beeches (7%) and lindens (8%) and other deciduous species, such as maples, hornbeams and, to a lesser extent, cranes, bream, elms and bird cherries. Conifers are represented by larch, pine and Douglas fir, for example.
The whole area of Lítožnice has been undergoing a major transformation recently. In 2020, the revitalization of the Lítožnický pond and the Říčanský brook was completed here, whose bed under the pond gained new meanders and several new ponds.
Another event was the planting of a new part of the forest in the U Čeňku landscape park, which has been gradually emerging for several years, originally in the open plain between the Černý Most housing estate and Dolní Počernice. After each stage, the area turns into a varied mosaic of recreational areas with playgrounds, fitness elements and gazebos, as well as woods, water areas and other more natural and less maintained places. In 2018, the revitalization of the northern part of the park was completed and other areas are gradually being modified, especially to the south towards Dolní Počernice. In the spring of 2021, our organization shows the afforestation of former farmland in this southern part of the park. We have established forest draws of various sizes in the locality below the Martiňák pond. During the spring, we planted 16,000 planted forest trees here, of which almost 95% were deciduous species. Traditionally, most oaks (8? 525), supplemented by lindens (2 – 125) and hornbeams (1 – 225) or, for example, baby maples, bird cherries, cranes, bricks and elms. The rest consisted of conifers – pine, Douglas fir and larch.
We also continued planting in the Na Musile landscape park, which is being built near the SAPA market in Prague-Kunratice on an area bordered on one side by the busy Kunratická spojka and on the other by Vídeňská Street. Overgrown and in some places inappropriately paved areas with a total size of 13.5 hectares will gradually replace the park with forest, meadows, water features and park paths. Our main task in this project is to afforest the local agricultural land. Already in 2020, we planted 54-100 forest tree seedlings on areas totaling over 5.6 hectares. In 2021 we continued the plantings and reforested another section. We planted 5,500 forest seedlings on an area of over half a hectare. Traditionally, the species composition was dominated by deciduous trees – oaks (50%), lindens (10%) and hornbeams (5%), which supplemented with maples, beeches or cherries and from coniferous species larch, fir or pine. To prevent the seedlings from damaging the game, we set up a 450-meter-long fence around the newly planted areas.
This year’s spring plantings are also waiting for us. During the spring months in Prague, we plan to plant over 120,000 seedlings, most of them in open areas intended for afforestation. We will plant young trees again in the Lítožnice area and in the U Čeňku park. Of the existing forests, the largest allocation of seedlings, the Kunratice Forest, awaits.
