The streets of Ukrainian heroes and the bridge over the defender of Kherson. Prague approved changes in the journal at night
Prague will change the name of the part of Korunovační Street at the Russian Embassy to Ukrainian Heroes. He also names a nearby railway bridge after the Ukrainian war hero Vitaly Skakun, who died on February 24 in the Ukrainian city of Kherson, where he blew up the bridge to prevent the advance of Russian troops. At one o’clock in the morning, city councilors instructed the city council to approve the name. The move was proposed by the Prague 6 City Council.
Councilor Jan Chabr (TOP 09) stated that the proposal was stated by the local council of the municipality, on the basis of the recommendation, the council approves the names of streets and public spaces. According to the councilor, the change will not be a complication for the residents, because no one lives in the part of the street near Boris Němcová Square. “There is no natural person in the given area who would have to change his / her ID card, nor is there any registered office of any legal entity other than the Russian Federation,” said the councilor.
The renaming of the street was criticized by the head of the YES club, Ondřej Prokop. “I can’t help but think that it will come to me as such a cheap, cheap PR gesture of some representatives in Prague 6, instead of paying attention to what really worries Praguers,” he said. He added that the name Coronation has a historical meaning. Chabr replied that nothing would change. “Korunovační street in Prague remains, it only shortens by about 150 meters,” he said.
At least temporarily in connection with the war in Ukraine, Prague 2 also renamed one of its streets. As its spokeswoman Veronika Blažková stated, the city councilors decided to temporarily affix signs in Přátelství Street on the Czech-Ukrainian side. “The name of our main street in Uhříněves refers to the friendship between Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union. It is symbolic that we will give it a different meaning right now, “said Councilor Štěpán Zmátlo (KDU-ČSL).
The naming or renaming of the public space in Prague is approved by the City Council. Suggestions can be submitted by anyone. The proposals are first discussed by the town hall of the relevant city district. After approval by its management, it is forwarded to the municipal topographical commission. If he agrees with him, he will then be discussed by Prague councilors. By law, public names may not be named after anyone living.
On the same day, the PRAGUE coalition movement came up with a proposal that the new bridge between Podolí and Smíchov, which is to start construction this year, be named after Smíchov’s native and former US Ministry, Madeleine Albright Bridge.
