Hertha and Fürth shock Leipzig’s competitors
Ironically, two basement clubs in the Bundesliga made RB Leipzig two passes on Saturday for the game of Saxony on Sunday tomorrow against Eintracht Frabkfurt. Bottom of the table Fürth played against SC Freiburg 0-0, Big City crisis club Hertha surprisingly beat Hoffenheim 3-0.
Crunch time in April
With a win against SGE, RB can put three points between them and TSG and two on the sports club. If third-placed Leverkusen also loses in Wolfsburg, Leipzig, currently fifth in the table, can even jump to third place. This would put RB in a good position before the Crunchtime weeks in April to still reach the Champions League minimum goal of the season after a mixed first half.
Hertha can still do it: That wasn’t the case for a long time, but even without Felix Magath on the touchline, Hertha BSC easily won the first game under the new head coach and stopped the downward trend. After five defeats in a row, the Berlin Bundesliga club won 3-0 at home against Hoffenheim and left the direct relegation zone with their first win in 2022.
Magath, who was ill with Corona, watched the game from his quarantine in the hotel and was represented by his assistant coach Mark Fotheringham, saw Hertha significantly improved in terms of tactics and attitude. The goals came from Niklas Stark (39′), Ishak Belfodil (63′) and David Raum with an own goal (74′).
Matchday winner in beating SGE
Hoffenheim disappointed in front of around 25,000 spectators in the Olympic Stadium for long stretches and after five games without defeat suffered a setback in the fight for a place in the Champions League.
This also applies to SC Freiburg. Playing in Fürth should be a safe threesome if you want to get into the premier class. At the designated relegated SpVgg Greuther Fürth, the team of coach Christian Streich remained undefeated in the sixth Bundesliga game in a row, but did not get more than 0-0.
Freiburg were unlucky when Roland Sallai (13′) and Janik Haberer (67′) hit the post and crossbar, but for long stretches they couldn’t find any means against a dogged defending and occasionally dangerous cloverleaf. For Fürth, the point in the fight against relegation is again not enough. The gap to the relegation place is eleven points with seven games left until the end of the season. After all, the climber was a shame after the 1: 6 against RB last weekend.
The Saxons could be the big winners of the match day if they beat Frankfurt, especially in the weeks following the international break. They are against Dortmund, Hoffenheim, Leverkusen, Union Berlin twice (league and cup) and Bergamo twice (Europa League).
