The EU is sending Frontex agents to the Republic of Moldova, and France will provide logistical assistance
The European Union approved on Thursday evening the sending of employees of the Agency for Border Protection (Frontex) to the Republic of Moldova, and France will provide the Chisinau Government with logistical capabilities in the context of the influx of Ukrainian refugees, informs the daily Le Figaro.
The European Union has signed an agreement with the Government of Chisinau to send Frontex agents to assist the staff of the Border Police and the European Communications Commission. Frontex agents will be able to cooperate in operations against human trafficking at the border between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. According to EU data, more than 300,000 Ukrainian citizens have fled to the Republic of Moldova due to the war.
“Moldova has problems protecting its own borders with Ukraine, it can only register refugees,” EU Home Affairs Commissioner Ylva Johansson said on Wednesday.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian announced on Thursday evening, after a conversation with his Moldovan counterpart, Nicu Popescu, that France would send logistical capabilities to the Republic of Moldova. “17 high-capacity generators will be sent to strengthen the resistance of electrical networks in medical units in the Republic of Moldova,” said Jean-Yves Le Drian.
