Iohannis and Sanchez talk about the war in Ukraine: “Moldova needs our support” / “Europe is more united today”
President Klaus Iohannis and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez discussed a war at the Cotroceni Palace on Thursday about the war in Ukraine and the consequences of the Russian invasion. The two addressed the energy issue, as well as the humanitarian issue of the conflict unleashed by Vladimir Putin.
“The war in Ukraine means, first and foremost, a deep humanitarian crisis. The dramas of millions of Ukrainians who are forced to leave their bombed country are devastating. From the first moment, Romania has given full support to all refugees from Ukraine who come to our country “, said President Klaus Iohannis.
“We are not concerned about the impact of the energy crisis in Ukraine, especially since we are not experiencing a substantial increase in energy prices even before this crisis, and we have had a wide-ranging discussion with Mr Sanchez on this issue. The objective of ensuring energy security at EU level thus becomes, in the current context, of greater strategic importance. In fact, at the informal meeting of the European Council in Versailles, last week, we formulated a series of important decisions aimed at eliminating energy dependencies from the Russian Federation “, he also told the state.
Klaus Iohannis specified that Romania is willing to provide its own energy infrastructure for the diversification of the supply with natural gaze from multiple sources.
“Measures taken at European level must also take into account the energy security of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine. That is what we have said today, because the two neighboring states need our immediate help. This means taking concrete and consistent action in this direction, “said Klaus Iohannis.
The Spanish Prime Minister condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine and said that Putin was wrong when he believed that the European Union would not act united against Russia.
“Putin believed that we would act separately, he did not believe that the European community would show unity, but the reality contradicted him. We all condemn this invasion. We have united not only at EU level but also bilaterally with Ukraine. Each country sends humanitarian aid to Ukraine. (…) The package of sanctions against Russia will continue to grow. In Spain, we have imposed very harsh sanctions on Russian oligarchs. Putin made three dramatic mistakes for his own sake, “Sanchez said.
“It simply came to our notice then. It is the best thing we can do against this invasion of Putin. Europe is more united today. It turned out during the pandemic and now during the war. This challenge that Putin is launching shows us very clearly that the EU has a very strong project, “said the head of the Spanish government.
