WE WANT TO BE AT THE BIENNIAL too! PRAGUE NATIONAL GALLERY ORGANIZES A DISCUSSION ON THE VENICE BIENNIAL OF ARCHITECTURE 2023
Experts Imro Vaško, Karolína Vránková, Petra Hlaváčková and Helena Huber Doudová will discuss the Czech participation in the Biennial of Architecture, which is produced from 20 May to 20 November 2023, at the Trade Fair Palace from 6 pm.
The Czech Republic has been represented at this one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious exhibitions of fine arts and architecture since 1920, and has long participated in the National Gallery in Prague. In recent years, these activities remain a number of challenges that will not be possible without an open discussion with the professional and general public. The current situation resulting from the ongoing reconstruction concerning the pavilion raises questions about the Czech representation at the biennial and possible innovative formats and approaches.
NGP CEO Alicja Knast considers the presentation of Czech art abroad to be an important strategy of the institution, according to her the reflexive impulses of our art scene and the importance of open dialogue are less important.
In the discussion moderated by Yvette Vašourková, the aim and ambitions of the presentation of the Czech Republic at the Biennial of Architecture will be stated, how to approach the various topics of its individual years or how to bridge the period of reconstruction of the pavilion.
The discussion is public and will be streamed via NGP social networks.
The Czech and Slovak pavilions in Venice, whose author is Otakar Novotný, which is now closed and extensive overall reconstruction, required damage to roofs and roof ceilings caused by a tree in the summer of 2019. The last exhibition representing the Czech Republic was prepared by Stanislav Kolíbal for the 58th year. . The National Gallery has long been striving for an alternative involvement of the Czech Republic in this international exhibition of art and architecture before the pavilion is repaired and ready for the implementation of annual exhibition projects.
The outputs of the discussion will be used for further negotiations with the Ministry of Culture as the founder of NGP and for the preparation of the competition, from which the project that the Czech Republic will be represented next year will be.
