Energy – Hanover – opponents of nuclear power warn of extending the term for nuclear power plants – economy
Hanover (dpa / lni) – environmental groups and citizens’ initiatives have warned against the expected use of nuclear power plants in Germany. With regard to statements by North Rhine-Westphalia’s Economics Minister Andreas Pinkwart (FDP) about extending the service life of the three remaining nuclear power plants in Germany until 2029, they emphasized that the use of nuclear energy cannot solve the current energy and climate problems. “The use of nuclear energy is unsustainable, it is expensive, it is extremely risky and the nuclear waste means a heavy legacy for future generations,” it said in a statement distributed on Wednesday.
It was signed, among others, by the Lüchow-Dannenberg citizens’ initiative for environmental protection, the Federal Association of Citizens’ Initiatives for Environmental Protection (BBU) and the Münsterland action alliance against nuclear plants. “Instead of demanding the production of more nuclear waste in other federal states, Minister Pinkwart would be well advised to take care of the nuclear waste that already exists in NRW, for example in Gronau and Ahaus,” says BBU board member Udo Buchholz.
Pinkwart had pointed out the possibility of extending the term. The federal government does not see any contribution to securing the security of the electricity supply in the short term in the continued operation. For the period from 2023 to 2029, however, “there is still no final decision to forego this option. That’s how I understand it,” Pinkwart said in Düsseldorf.
