Amsterdammers opt for Bloemenmarkt with more flowers
A survey was held among Amsterdam residents and entrepreneurs about the function and appearance of the Flower Market. The results are clear: the Flower Market must remain a flower market, but must be different from now.
More than 1500 people completed the survey in full. The subject is alive with the residents and entrepreneurs of Amsterdam. Less two-thirds of respondents do not recommend a visit to the market, in its current form, with friends of family. Yet more than half find the concept of a flower market valuable for the city.
Flowers belong to Amsterdam
One of the most common reasons why the Bloemenmarkt should remain with flowers is that flowers belong to Amsterdam and to the Netherlands. However, a large majority of both residents (95 percent) and entrepreneurs in the area (85 percent) indicate that the Flower Market is undergoing change. Elements often mentioned are that it is now too overdue and unattractive.
Most mentioned by residents is that more flowers and plants should be sold with attention to the quality of the products, aimed at residents and not just at tourists. The flower stall holders were also asked about the future of the Flower Market. The majority indicate that they are open to an adjustment in the offer.
Sustainability and green
According to the respondents, the Flower Market could also be a place for knowledge about sustainability and greenery in the city. Where residents can obtain information about how they can make their roof, garden, balcony or facade greener and how to make them climate-proof.
Outdated appearance
Amsterdammers indicate that the Bloemenmarkt has a closed and outdated appearance. The survey shows that people actually miss the connection with the canal and the water. Provide the respondents with an image of the Flower Market with lots of greenery and a view of the water. A place where you can relax during the day and in the evening you can also walk through with a feeling of safety.
Flower Market Transformation
After this phase of the research phase, we met the residents and entrepreneurs in and around the Bloemenmarkt, among others, to see how we can change the market into this market and want a location for everyone. We are preparing a future plan for this. For more information and further developments, see www.amsterdam.nl/bloemenmarkt.
