Egnatia Railway: ‘Green’ light for the Thessaloniki-Kavala section
The project for the new Thessaloniki-Xanthi railway line took another step forward. With the decision of the Ministry of Environment and Energy, the environmental conditions for the section from Thessaloniki to Nea Karvali were approved. This is the largest part of the new line that is under auction by ERGOSE and the studies were conducted by OSE.
The new railway line Thessaloniki – Amfipolis – Nea Karvali will greatly strengthen the railway network of Northern Greece and will contribute to increasing rail transit, which is a more environmentally friendly mode of transport than road.

and each road network and the location of railway stations and stops.

The feasibility of the project lies in the significant reduction of the total length and travel time in the western part of the railway axis Thessaloniki – Toxotes – Alexandroupolis and therefore in the enhancement of the attractiveness of the railway transport, especially freight type, which are environmentally friendly. clearly preferable. In addition, the railway connection of the Commercial Port of Kavala (Nea Karvali) is achieved, the development of combined commercial transport, the upgrade of the railway connection with Bulgaria and Turkey and the securing interoperability of the railway corridor.

In addition, this decision includes measures to address the impact on the protected ecological elements of the Natura 2000 network areas in the lakes of Koronia and Volvi.
