Zurich city parliament caps the wages of senior doctors
At 750,000 francs, the Zurich city parliament capped the wages of senior doctors in its session on Wednesday evening. The wage cap was triggered by the abuses at the university hospital.
In future, the maximum remuneration for senior doctors may no longer exceed CHF 750,000. In addition, there are no longer any incentives for new ineffective treatments in the fee system. Anyone who operates more does not necessarily earn more.
AL and FDP were against the new fee system: AL still found the 750,000 francs too much. This will cement a wage gap of 1:14 within a hospital for years to come. They would rather set the wage cap at CHF 500,000.
The FDP did not criticize the primary wage cap, but the extremely complicated wage system. That is not employee friendly. The remuneration now consists of a fixed salary, a specialist component and a variable component. The instruction of the city council accordingly extends to more than 30 pages.
With the upper limit of CHF 750,000, the city of Zurich goes further than the canton of Zurich, which decided on a salary cap of CHF 1 million last July. The city council also found the million reasonable. However, the red-green majority in parliament disagreed and lowered the lid.
Due to the cantonal regulations, Parliament was “forced” to introduce a wage system with a wage cap. If the city had not followed suit, the city hospital would have lost its place on the cantonal list of hospitals.
The new salary systems in the canton and city of Zurich are a direct result of various grievances at the University Hospital Zurich. The former director of the clinic for heart surgery was privately involved in a company that manufactured implants that he used himself in the operations.
