Catrin Häusser has completely realigned her internet platform because of Corona.
What family doesn’t know that? It’s the weekend and the question of a possible trip or activity is in the room. If the weather is good, you could go outside, if it’s bad, you need an alternative inside. Do you have to take it with you? What is there anyway? In the end you stay at home or decide on a destination you already know because you don’t want any unpleasant surprises. But couldn’t it be easier? It can! At least that’s what Catrin Häusser says.
The 39-year-old from Frankfurt launched the blog “Frankfurt mit Kids” almost four years ago. Via Instagram and the website, she provided information about excursion destinations that she had visited herself and evaluated and tested based on a number of criteria. “The whole thing was so well received that I gave up my marketing job in 2020.” While Häußer’s offer often only had three views a day at the beginning, it was a million at peak times.
In the past, the 39-year-old controlled herself through selected and suitable cooperations with some excursion destinations and online advertising. But with Corona, this business model collapsed. The advertising revenue went down and the collaborations no longer made any sense. “Many offers were indoors and then closed. And doesn’t fall, there was simply no money for advertising.”
Häusser had to change their model. They began offering e-books that they compiled thematically from their experiences. For example on the subject of outdoor or playground tips. In addition, she explains and illustrates ABC posters and finally a card game: “Ideal for the trip to the destination.” She sells all of this in her online shop, which she set up during the pandemic.
She got a lot of inspiration when she decided to take part in the “Shape (y)our future” project of the “jumpp” association. Jumpp accompanies women in various phases of professional independence. The digitization of their business model was a first step, which may soon be followed by a second with their own app. “The design is there, but there is no partner to implement the idea now,” says Häusser. With the app, families should be able to spontaneously check what options are available nearby.
And what about the excursion destinations, the actual DNA of the family and leisure platform? Häusser has also made changes there. A small part of the tips can still be obtained for free, such as the current winter special. But most of the information is in the premium area. There, the excursion generator helps with the decision-making process as to where to go this time. “You can enter the ages of the children or whether you want to be outside or inside or how long you have time.” In the end, it’s a selection of suitable destinations.
Häusser offers locations within a two-hour radius of Frankfurt. From the Odenwald to the Wetterau. And they only list worthwhile destinations. “It’s an enormous relief for many.” Also because, thanks to the 39-year-old, they know what to take with them and what to look out for. The premium offer currently costs EUR 9.90 per month or EUR 99 per year. Increasing expansions follow, also because Häusser is always looking for new locations. “I always have a small checklist in my head when I go on an excursion,” says the mother of two sons. She also received a lot of feedback from the community. “There are still many ideas in the pipeline.”
