Kongsberg Maritime will deliver a new zero-emission ferry
Kongberg will deliver its high-tech propulsion and control systems that will ensure that Scandline’s new next-generation all-electric ferries achieve zero emissions – an important step in the green shift. The ferry, which will be the world’s largest zero-emission electric ferry, was designed by LMG Marin AS in Norway and will be built at Cemre Shipyard in Turkey.
Kongberg has been the main supplier of propulsion systems to Scandlines for over 20 years and has in recent years contributed strength to the company’s emission reduction strategy.
The new ferry is 147.4 meters long and designed to carry 140 passengers and 66 trucks. The ferry will have a service speed of 16 knots and will be equipped with Azipull, Kongsberg Maritimes are called traction azimuth thrusters and control systems for propulsion and steering.
CAPACITY INCREASE
The ferry will sail between Puttgarden on the German island of Fehmarn, and Rødby in Denmark. With a capacity of 66 trucks, this is a capacity increase of 23 percent. Emission crossings will be completed in one go and in 10 minutes. The vessel can also operate as a hybrid, so that the journey time is reduced to 45 minutes.
Updating the infrastructure to support the new electric ferry and its planned successors is already underway. The 50kV / 25MW power cable that Scandlines laid in Rødby harbor in 2019 will be extended to the ferry berths, where a transformer and charging station will also be installed. There will also be charging options in Puttgarden when solutions for purchasing green electricity are in place.
