The Russian embassy no longer has anything to do in Prague. Citizens have shown it, it’s the government’s turn – Forum24
When you come to the Russian embassy these days, you will get a picture that you may never see again. There are pictures, messages and Ukrainian flags all around. Sometimes ironic, sometimes vulgar to Russian President Vladimir Putin. The cops are all around. Passing cars often honk when traveling around. What does it mean? People no longer want the Russian embassy in Prague. They do not want the official representatives of those who murder Ukrainian children. It is time to consider a complete closure and the expulsion of the Russian ambassador.
The Russian embassy is housed in a beautiful building on the corner of Boris Nemtsov Square and the Coronation Square, part of which will soon be renamed Ukrainian Heroes. It is a house that belonged to the Czech banker Jiří Popper and was seized by the Nazis, and Edvard Beneš, although he knew Popper personally and knew he was alive, dedicated the house to the Soviet Union. The Russian embassy serves as a factory for lies and propaganda and at the same time as the seat of enemy agents, eighteen of whom were expelled due to the attack in Vrbětice. But that’s not enough. After what Putin is doing, there is nothing to talk about. No diplomatic relations are maintained and may be maintained with modern Hitlers. Belarus, Syria, Eritrea or the DPRK have the states that stood up for it at the UN.
But it is important to say that the force and symbolism of the necessary step is not only in the fact that Mr. Zmejevsky finally packs his bags and leaves, but also in the subsequent expropriation of the house and preferably its return to the Popper family, who later tried to judge the building. . The only thing that can correct not only the current shameful situation, but at least partially improve what Beneš did.
The Czech government is responding well and decisively to the current crisis, and our republic is one of the most willing to assist Ukraine, both in humanitarian and arms issues, or in pushing for further sanctions to be imposed on the Russian Federation. However, it should not relax even on home soil and make sure that it does not stay only with consulates in other cities outside Prague.
The author of this text is, of course, aware that such a step will not happen tomorrow. If this frustrates you as well, go for a walk around Boris Němcová Square and add a message somewhere. Maybe – like me – you will meet a car that takes embassy staff out because they can’t walk out on the street. They are well aware of that. They are not well there. So let’s hope they go better somewhere soon.
