This year 42 yards on Flemish highways: a lot of nuisance expected around Antwerp and Brussels
Minister Lydia Peeters of Mobility and Public Works kicked off the 2022 construction season at a press moment at the Heverlee traffic interchange near Leuven. In total, 42 will be worked in 2022, good for about 81 kilometers of new or renewed road surface, excluding Oosterweel. All together, it involves an investment of 476 million euros.

“Our highways have been improving in recent years and with these works we are going one step further,” said Minister Peeters. “Nevertheless, in Flanders we can still continue with a maintenance backlog. By investing in the renovation, renewal and maintenance of our infrastructure, we ensure the renovation turnaround. In this way we are building a safer, smoother and future-proof road network in the long term,” said the minister.
In addition to normal highway renovation, various tunnel and bridge works are also planned. These included the renewal of the lighting and wall panels in the Kennedy tunnel, the construction of a calamity crossing in the Vierarmen tunnel, the thorough renovation of the Leonard tunnel and the renovation of the viaduct in Vilvoorde.
The biggest nuisance for 2022 is expected, among other things, on the Brussels inner and outer ring, due to the start of the renovation of the Vilvoorde viaduct. Major delays are also expected due to work on the E40, both in Erpe-Mere and Sterrebeek. Finally, the renovation of the Trumpet connection R8/A19 in Kortrijk, the works on the Kennedy tunnel and the reconstruction of the bridge at Wommelgem on the E313cause major disruption.
