Klaus Iohannis: We do not currently have data showing a scenario that the Republic of Moldova is threatened
President Klaus Iohannis said on Saturday that there are currently no data to support a scenario suitable for Moldova that would be threatened by Russian Federation forces.
Visiting the mobile refugee camp in Siret, President Iohannis was asked about the prospect of Moldova being the next target of Russian forces and whether Romania has plans for this scenario, given that more than one million people live in Moldova. Romanian citizens.
“We start from the scenario in which this conflict will not expand, NATO will not be involved in this military conflict and Romania will not be involved in this conflict either. Our role that we see is the one that we have described. We help those who take refuge, we will also help those who will stay in Ukraine. And we are in a very close relationship with Moldova and we are determined that, in the event that humanitarian aid is needed, we should intervene there as well. We do not have data now that shows a scenario that Moldova would be threatened “, replied President Iohannis.
“We are not now calculating a scenario in which Romania is involved in the conflict or is threatened. I can say one simple thing: here in Romania, we are at home, this is our country and we stay here! ” – said the head of state.
Separate Tiraspol officials said in a press release on Friday that they did not agree with Moldova’s application for EU membership and called for recognition of Transnistria’s independence. The so-called Foreign Ministry in Tiraspol said it was unhappy that the Transnistrian side had not been consulted and called for Chisinau to dialogue “for a civilized divorce and the stability of inter-state relations.”
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bogdan Aurescu, underlined, on Friday, “Romania’s strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders”.
