Brussels proposes special status for Ukrainian refugees – Wel.nl
BRUSSELS (Reuters) – The European Commission wants to give refugees from Ukraine who come to the EU a temporary, protected status. They face fewer formalities at Ukraine’s borders with the EU countries, can enjoy at least one year in the EU without an asylum procedure, and they also have the right to work and access to services such as school or medical care. The EU has yet to propose it.
Thanks to a treaty with the EU, the country attacked by Russia can already stay in the EU for up to 90 days. The period can be extended to one year and, if necessary, two more six months, by activating a special arrangement. It was designed after the war in Yugoslavia to accommodate the flow of refugees, but was never used. According to estimates, the EU can expect up to 7 million refugees from Ukraine. President Ursula von der Leyen said “all who flee from Putin’s bombs are welcome” in the EU. “We will protect those who seek shelter.”
The commission to be flexible with the entry formalities at the border for humanitarian reasons. By using an exception rule, Ukrainian refugees who no longer have a passport can be admitted. The committee also finds that pets can be accepted without too many problems. There are four EU countries bordering Ukraine: Poland, Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.
EU interior ministers will discuss the proposal in Brussels on Thursday.
