Will Toulouse welcome Ukrainian refugees?
The City of Toulouse is twinned with Kiev. Will it welcome refugees from the capital of Ukraine, by virtue of these privileged privileges? The department of Haute-Garonne will vote financial aid to associations working with refugees.
Since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine by the Russian army, 500,000 people have left the country, according to the UN. Concerning the reception of refugees in France, the Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean-Yves Le Drian affirmed yesterday that the State, “with the local communities” was used to welcome them “in the best conditions”.
The City of Toulouse has been twinned with that of Kiev since 1975. The mayor of Toulouse, Jean-Luc Moudenc, gave his support to the Ukrainian people, in a tweet, seeing a letter of support for the mayor of Kiev and physically participating, Sunday, at the demonstration in support of the Ukrainian people, Place du Capitole.
We asked the Capitol and the mayor yesterday to find out what concrete actions they intended to take vis-à-vis the population of the Ukrainian capital, in particular.
“Humanitarian solidarity actions will come”, declared Jean-Luc Moudenc to the Dépêche du Midi (our edition of February 26). “Today, they are being studied by the town hall, to correctly identify the needs and identify the most effective means to benefit the Ukrainian population and Kiev as a priority”.
Yesterday, on the side of the Capitol, we had not yet specified these needs and these means to help Kiev, it seems.
100,000 euros from the Department of Haute-Garonne
For his part, Georges Méric, president of the Departmental Council of Haute-Garonne, who also assures the people of his Ukrainian support, “will submit to the vote of departmental elected officials, during the session of March 8, the mobilization of an exceptional envelope of €100,000 for associations working on Ukrainian territory or with displaced populations in neighboring countries”.
