Was shot in Ukraine: – We are not afraid anymore, but we want to get away from here
In an interview with Ekstra Bladet, the journalists now tell about the dramatic event that took place.
Well, they are hospitalized in the city of Poltova, where they are now being treated for the injuries.
– When we were in the hospital in Ohtyrka, we could often hear shots and fly in the background. We are very shaken and scared, says Weichert Extra Bladet Sunday.
It was when the two Danish journalists were going to a kindergarten in the town of Ohtyrka, which had previously been bombed, that they themselves were shot at.
After being shot, they managed to escape in the car they used to get around the country. But when they escaped the shots, the car was parked in the garden. There was smoke coming from the car and they saw themselves having to drive in to the side.
Here they had to stay until they received help.
They have both been transported about 100 kilometers away from the front lines and to safety at night.
The car is shot to pieces
Filtenborg was shot three times, and has been operated on at the hospital in Ohtyrka. He will need further surgery as a result of the injuries. It is not certain that he will be able to drive on the uneven roads that are in Ukraine, the newspaper writes.
The car the two drove was considered completely damaged. Both the engine and the gearbox in the car are shot to pieces. Because the airspace over Ukraine is closed, it is only possible to use a car to get the two journalists out of the country and back to Denmark.
If they get a new car, however, it is not certain that it is a good solution due to the damage the two were inflicted.
– Emil can not press the accelerator pedal, and I can not change gears, says Weichert.
Dramatic trip
When the two were transported by ambulance to Poltova last night, they were asked to turn off their phones so they would not be detected.
– It was dark when we drove, so we were told to turn the phone so that the Russians could not track us, Weichert said.
Weichert and Filtenborg get help from the security staff of Ekstra Bladet to get out of the country as soon as possible.
– We are not so scared anymore, but we want to get away from here, Weichert says.
Who shot at the two journalists is previously unknown.
