“He’s ready to play”, Guardiola’s nice message to Ukrainian Zinchenko
Oleksandr Zinchenko was doubtful for Manchester City’s meeting with Everton on Saturday night following news of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Ukrainian left-back was born in the northern town of Radomyshl and played for Shakhar Donetsk while representing his country 48 times.
It’s an understatement to say that the 25-year-old has strong ties to his home country, so news of the invasion hit him hard. Zinchenko attended an anti-war vigil in Manchester and said he “couldn’t stay back”. But Pep Guardiola admits he is fit to play against the Toffees on Manchester Evening News.
“We talked about all of us, I talked to him. Everyone, friends, staff. We live this world. These are the headlines unfortunately all over the world, it is worrying. Aleks is a strong skilled guy, a really brilliant guy. Of course it’s not easy, but today and yesterday in training he was brilliant. He is ready to play in case he has to play”.
Zinchenko did 15 appearances in all competitions this season, and has provided two assists. The 25-year-old hasn’t been a regular in the Premier League car Joao Cancelo is Guardiola’s first choice at left-back but has proven reliable when called upon.
