Belgium and Great Britain sign an agreement on electrical interconnection
(Belga) The Belgian and British Energy Ministers, Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen), and Greg Hands, initialed on Wednesday an energy cooperation agreement relating to the electricity interconnection.
The agreement covers the production of offshore renewable energy and the multipurpose interconnection as well as the efficient use of this infrastructure, the development and deployment of low-carbon hydrogen. It also discusses carbon capture, use and storage. According to Tinne Van der Straeten, Belgium and the United Kingdom are signing a new cooperation agreement to build a second interconnector. “The existing electricity interconnector, Nemo-Link, is one of the most efficient interconnectors in the world. The new interconnector, which would be connected to the energy island, will be hybrid. This means that electricity can be exchanged directly between both countries and that new wind farms can also be connected to them”, she commented on Wednesday evening. “Anticipate is more commendable. This is evidenced by Belgium’s offshore electricity production, which is breaking all records and a positive effect on lower prices. The new interconnector is part of the plan to transform the North Sea into a great sustainable power plant,” she added. The agreement signed on Wednesday comes after the signing of a complementary cooperation agreement by Prime Minister Boris Johnson and Prime Minister Alexander de Croo in November 2021, in which the two Prime Ministers recognized the importance of the strong partnership between the Kingdom United Kingdom and Belgium in the field of energy.
