midwives on indefinite strike from this Monday
The midwives of the Lyon-Sud hospital are called to strike from this Monday to report job cuts and bed closures.
This comes a few days after the announcement by the management of the elimination of 10.4 full-time equivalents in the positions of midwives, nursing assistants and hospital service agents, as well as the closure of five maternity beds, in this hospital which has 2000 births per an approx. “We are not talking about numbers. We deal with people, with mothers, with babies. But the management only have numbers, which we would like to see by the way“Explains Laetitia Bonin, midwife at the Lyon-Sud maternity ward.
The staff fear that these post closures will have an impact on the quality of care: “For example, at night, in the delivery room, one fewer post means one fewer person to answer the bells, to welcome patients, to ensure the safety of mothers and babies. We are being asked to do as much, or even more, with less. So it will necessarily be to the detriment of the quality of care and safety.“, regrets Laetitia Bonin.
This decision could also have a consequence on the creation of the physiological pole which was in progress. “Parents distributed to Lyon-Sud because it corresponded to their birth plan. This may divert patients to other maternities“, says the midwife.
A rally will take place this Monday at 2 p.m. in front of the Lyon-Sud maternity hospital. New actions are also carried out in the coming days. In the meantime, a petition has been posted on the site Change.org. The text has already received nearly 8,000 signatures.
