Czechs do not recognize stroke. It’s about minutes, the doctor warns
“I couldn’t hit my mouth with my hand, but I didn’t give it any weight,” he told the Diary. The next day, half of the body was even paralyzed, and it was gradually moved by paramedics at the hospital for regular rehabilitation. Today he is already seventy-one, performing at public events and singing in choir. When she is tired, she does not stretch.
In the Czech Republic, a stroke affects approximately 30,000 people, nine thousand of whom die. However, neurologists warn that up to two thousand would be able to know the symptoms in time or their surroundings in time. A stroke is literally minutes away. The sooner a person calls an ambulance, the better.

The chairman of the Cerebrovascular Section of the Czech Neurological Society of the Czech Medical Association JEP Aleš Tomek to ensure three symptoms. They are sudden weakness of the hand and foot, a drop in a corner on one side of the face, or a speech disorder in which one suddenly cannot recall words, speak, or pronounce correctly.
Even those who are nearby can help significantly. If a person has a slightly clumsy hand, it can be tested by forearm. All he has to do is hold both arms up for ten seconds. If one hand falls a few inches, you should immediately call line 155. If the corner falls, it is a good idea to ask him to smile or bar his teeth. Speech can be checked to make it clear, understandable and fluent.
Better unnecessarily than ever
“When a person feels one of these three symptoms, almost ninety percent of them have a stroke,” Tomek told Deník. It is important that the patient does not go to the hospital alone, but prefers to call “fast”. Paramedics know which hospitals specialize in strokes. In addition, it provides the person with help directly in the car. According to the doctor, it is better to call unnecessarily than not at all. “If a person gets to us within an hour and a half, the success of the treatment is three times greater than if he comes after six hours,” Tomek emphasized.

Strokes have long been the second most common cause of death in the Czech Republic. Right after heart disease. Because many people do not recognize the symptoms of a stroke and mistakenly believe that they will sleep from it until the next day, rescuers are preparing a concise and clear brochure with practical information in the shape of a brain this year. They want to distribute it to people in hospitals or pharmacies.
“We will also offer it at our schools, courses or stands for the public,” Michal Petržela, chairman of the Life RESCUE association – Prague rescuers, told Deník. In order for a useful aid to emerge, rescuers have set up a collection in which people can contribute to a good cause (see box).
