In March, Prague will host one of the most important international events in the field of environmental education and sustainability education, the 11th World Congress of Environmental Education (World Congress of Environmental Education). Its focal point is to build bridges between different approaches to environmental education and training for sustainable development, across international borders, between formal, non-formal and community education, and between researchers and practitioners around the world.
One of the keynote speakers will be American educator David Sobel, one of the founders of the so-called locally grounded teaching, which seeks to connect schools and local communities. Other world-class eco-education personalities, such as Arjen Wals, Karen Malone, David Orr, Heila Lotz-Sisitka, Judy Braus, Franz X. Bogner and Bruce Johnson, will also have contributions to the congress.
“Sometimes it seems difficult for us, working at universities, to find common ground with practitioners. It is similarly difficult for educators to speak with politicians or entrepreneurs, “says Jan Činčera from Masaryk University, who is the head of the organizing committee and the scientific committee of the congress. “But for a well-functioning environmental education, we need to find a way to each other,” he continues. “Theory and practice are connected vessels in education. When we cut them apart, the water starts to disappear from both. If we do eco-education only on our own sandstone and we don’t know about others, we can repeat the same mistakes all our lives and never figure it out. It is the courage to cross the river’s perspectives and explore others that move us forward. “
The congress takes place on 14-18. March 2022 in Prague, there may be physical or online participation, but a number of accompanying events will take place outside the capital. The congress takes place in the so-called hybrid form – lectures, discussions and workshops will take place both in Prague and its surroundings, as well as on a virtual platform with those who could not come.
An environmental congress of young people (Congress of Environmental Education of Youth), which will take place from 13 to 17 March. The event is for participants aged 14-26 who are active in civic, environmental, climate and similar initiatives. On Wednesday, March 16, the Youth Congress will be linked to the WEEC Congress. Representatives of the Youth Congress will present the outputs and requirements for changes in the field of education: Youth Challenge: Bridging Our Education and Participation in Times of Climate Urgency.
