City blog “Metropolis” – this is how Zurich ticks
Irène Troxler and Urs Bühler ask you the question of the week: What makes Zurich world class, and in which discipline would it be at risk of relegation even in the regional league of cities?
Irène Troxler and Urs Bühler, authors «Metropolis».
It may not move the world when the city of Zurich introduces a speed limit of 30 on Rosengartenstrasse, wants to sacrifice its historic theater hall for a highly polished stage temple, plans 250-meter-high towers or makes life difficult for innkeepers and their guests with all sorts of official requirements. But those who live, work or go out in this city are all the more pleased or annoyed. And when Zurich argues loudly or goes overboard again, half of Switzerland watches, whether amused, annoyed or with secret admiration.
In our new “NZZ Magazin” on magazin.nzz.ch, the local has its own vessel, which hopefully will be of interest far beyond the local borders: the city blog “Metropolis”. There we follow politics as well as city and night life, everyday street life and the culture of the city on the Limmat.
The city of Zurich has just re-elected its parliament and executive. The left majority is weakening. After the pronounced tendency to exaggerate in recent years, politics is likely to become somewhat more pragmatic again. The challenges are great: in traffic, in housing construction, in climate protection and in the deteriorating financial situation of the city, to name just a few issues. One can approach these tasks with reason or with ideological tunnel vision. We will accompany this from a liberal point of view, sometimes cheekier, sometimes more serious – always with a keen eye for the grotesque and the over-the-top, which constantly falls in front of your feet here.
Of course, it’s not just politics that is moving: If you want to take the pulse of this city with journalistic means, a wide field opens up between the financial center, trendy eating and drinking establishments and climate strikes. We do this with a heart that beats for Zurich, but also with drawn foils.
A blog text thrives on its spice, and as is well known, that lies in its brevity. We promise not to digress into generalities, always keep our eyes open for you and thus offer you a pleasant bite to eat every day – on the way home, in the evening, whenever it happens to you. Every working day at 4:30 p.m. we post a new «Metropolis» post.
Read for yourself. Smile about Zurich, shake your head and discuss everything that is the talk of the town with locals and non-Zurich residents. We look forward to feedback on how you like the blog.
