Vienna’s parks in winter, so romantic, so melancholy – neighboring Austria – Blog
Wien Tourismus, Vienna’s tourism promotion agency, suggests a visit to the city parks in their winter guise. Up until now, no one had come up with such an idea (or, at least, never heard of it), but it seems brilliant to us. There is something romantic in the bare garments of this season’s parks, which is not found in the splendor of the season. And it seems to us that such a melancholy landscape, if rich in suggestions, corresponds better to the Austrian soul, as has also been revealed to us by literature between the 19th and 20th centuries. Not to mention the spell that is touched by hand when crossing a park after a snowfall.
Vienna is truly a city of parks and gardens in every neighborhood. It has over 990 and we can only imagine how much it costs to maintain. This is why the consultancy Resonance Consultancy has declared Vienna “the greenest metropolis in the world”.
However, the Baroque Viennese parks and gardens do not represent a pleasant diversion only in the summer season. Baroque avenues and imperial parks are splendid even in winter and perfect for a nice walk. However, take into account the opening hours, which change in the cold season, when the gardens usually expand a little later and close earlier.
Sometimes it snows in Vienna and it is advisable to take this rare opportunity to take a nice walk. A winter visit to the park of the Schönbrunn Palace, the Stadtpark or the rose garden in the Volksgarten, which in summer boasts 400 different varieties of roses, is indeed an unforgettable experience even in winter. Speaking of roses: to ensure the flowering of roses also in the year to come and to protect them from frost and weathered plants, in winter they are packed in jute coffee bags.
