The new vegetables 2022 | The Journal of Montreal
The enthusiasm for urban agriculture is not diminishing! With the cost of food soaring, millions of Canadians are growing their own vegetables and herbs on their balconies or in their vegetable gardens.
Here are some new vegetables that will bring color to your vegetable patch and your plate this summer!
Eggplant ‘Ao Daimaru’
This ancestral Japanese eggplant variety produces green fruits with a creamy texture and a rich, slightly bitter flavor.
Provided the planter is in compost-rich soil and exposed to full sun, this vegetable will produce well even in northern regions.
Basilica ‘Red Rosie’
The ‘Red Rosie’ basil has attractive, very dense purple foliage, rounded in shape, up to 45 cm high and slightly wider.
The leaves of this purple basil have a taste quite similar to that of typical basil, which makes it possible to prepare an excellent pesto while giving a touch of color to the vegetable patch.
Whether it is grown in the ground in the vegetable patch, on the edge of a flower bed or in a pot on a terrace, it is necessary to place this basil in a warm and sunny place.
Echalion ‘Crème brûlée’
This cultivar of shallot is the result of a cross between an onion and a French shallot, which has allowed a combination between the yield and the perfect flavor.
The tender, sweet bulbs of ‘Crème Brûlée’ mature earlier than other varieties. The peel is a shiny copper pink color while the inside of the bulb is a pretty purplish pink and has a slight citrus flavor when eaten raw. When sautéed and caramelized, this vegetable develops its full flavor.
This easy-to-grow plant requires loose, well-drained soil located in full sun. ‘Crème Brûlée’ was awarded by the organization All America Selections.
Pepper ‘Klari Baby Cheese’
This ancestral variety of Hungarian origin forms fleshy and juicy fruits measuring 5 to 7.5 cm in diameter. The fruits initially consume a yellow hue then they turn bright red when ripe.
Easy to grow and very early, the ‘Klari Baby Cheese’ cultivar reaches perhaps over 45cm in height at maturity. This makes her an excellent strain for container growing.
Excellent raw or cooked in sauces, fruits are traditionally made into marinades in Eastern Europe.
‘Klari Baby Cheese’ was introduced in 1997 in the United States, but has recently become available in Quebec.
Tomato ‘Black Strawberry’
The surprisingly sweet fruits of this variety are streaked with greenish yellow, pink and purple. ‘Black Strawberry’ has a fantastic fruity taste, with hints of grapes and prunes.
This highly productive, early variety – fruits reach maturity in just 60 days – is an obvious choice for gardeners and urban farmers who want strong, early plants, but don’t want to sacrifice taste quality.
Tomato ‘Orange Accordion’
This is an indescribable tomato cultivar that will certainly not leave anyone indifferent. With its huge, strongly ribbed orange fruits, it is definitely one of the weirdest tomato cultivars around!
As this variety with enormous fruits is particularly demanding, it is best to plant it in rich, moist soil, in a place well protected from the winds and exposed to full sun, in order to obtain all the desired success.
Tomato ‘Sart Roloise’
This tomato cultivar produces yellow fruits with purple ribs and a complex, sweet, fruity flavor with a hint of acidity. It is a beefsteak-type variety that produces large fruits that can weigh up to 500 grams each.
Developed in Belgium, it is a cross between the ‘White Wonder’ tomato, which gives it sweet pineapple notes, and the ‘Baby Blue’ variety, which explains the indigo blue tint on the top of the fruits.
‘Sart Roloise’ will certainly be appreciated by all those who wish to add color and originality to their vegetable garden and their summer meals!
