Antwerp fire department receives 1,050 calls: “We are now actively calling people to determine damage” | Antwerp
AntwerpThe Antwerp Fire Brigade Zone has received a total of no fewer than 1,050 calls for storm damage. About 650 of these were still on hold on Friday evening around 10:30 PM. “We are now actively calling people to better estimate the severity of their damage and to make further plans,” said spokeswoman Jasmien O.
The heaviest wind has died down, but it was a busy day for the Antwerp Fire Brigade Zone on Friday. Just before 4 pm the counter had reached 100 calls, but an hour later there were already 300. It was mainly parts of roofs, solar panels and sails/flags had started flying. Some trees and even electricity poles also had an extra hard time. The Brabant tunnel was temporarily closed in both directions by solar panels on the roadway. Just before 6 pm it was already more than 700 and around 7 pm the cape of 900 was rounded.

The number of calls was delayed around 8 p.m., but at 10:30 p.m. the counter was already at 1,050. “Of these, about 650 are still on hold,” says Jasmien O. “We are now actively calling people to better estimate the severity of their damage and make further plans. If the damage is limited to private domain, a professional must be called in anyway. We will continue on site until midnight and start again on Saturday morning from 7.30am. This is mainly because of the burgers that are not unnecessarily stored in their night’s rest. Of course we try to finish the most urgent things tonight. We also have help today from some teams from the city of Antwerp and the Civil Protection, who will help further tomorrow. Those works may still take a long time.”
