Amsterdam continues advertising tax: “Entrepreneurs can also remove it”
Entrepreneurs will probably have to pay advertising tax from March. Former Amsterdam alderman Victor Everhardt sees no point in canceling the tax meeting.
For flags, facade advertisements, signboards and menus that can be seen from the public road, tax will soon have to be paid. That will save the city millions. After complaints from entrepreneurs, who closed the documents earlier due to the corona crisis, decided not to let the tax come into effect in January and February.
“I think this is one of the most bizarre measures ever taken”
VVD councilor Claire Martens asked again yesterday in the Stopera to introduce the advertising tax not displayed from March. “I think this is one of the most bizarre measures that have ever been taken. We cancel a lot with national support measures. But then we collect a new tax locally, that is trouser pocket-vest pocket.”
Majority
Everhardt then said that a majority of the city council had previously supported the introduction of the advertising tax. “The entrepreneurs have indeed received that exemption for January and February. We are now going to see what the next steps are, also nationally, for the corona approach. The entrepreneur can also respond by removing the advertising, of course.”
“The entrepreneur has the option not to pay for this advertising”
Martens then asked for clarification. “I just want to check with the alderman if he really says, if you don’t want to pay it, you should just take your opening hours or menu from the shop window?” Date confirmed by Everhardt afterwards. “I’m saying that the company has the ability to actually take action to indeed not have to pay for this advertising.”
Last council meeting
The VVD and the CDA have yet to get a draft to get rid of the advertising tax. Whether that should be drawn up by other parties remains to be seen, because the other parties must start to coordinate this. It was his last council meeting for Everhardt yesterday, he has still chosen his position because he has a new job.
