Wine, Cantine Verona extends the Quality Project to Cantina Custoza
Improving the quality of grapes through sustainable agronomic practices
Rome, Feb. 15 (askanews) – Cantine di Verona extends the Quality Project to Cantina di Custoza as well, in the name of environmental sustainability. Initially created by Cantina Valpantena for a third of the associated companies and then extended to Cantina Colli Morenici on about 50 hectares of vineyards, following the merger of the three realities in the Cantine di Verona group, the program also involves the Sommacampagna cooperative.
The main objective of the project is to improve the quality of the grapes for the production of excellent wines, today also through sustainable agronomic practices and with a reduced environmental impact. In particular, the first phase, started with the 2021 harvest, aims to obtain quality grapes for the production of Custoza Superiore.
Among the results achieved so far, the obtaining for all the farms participating in the project of the SNQPI territory certification, which certifies the sustainability of the wines and business management. The technical staff of Cantine di Verona, also responsible for carrying out constant checks on the vineyards of the companies associated with the initiative, provide the vineyard management indications. Among the evaluation parameters, in addition to the quality of the grapes, there is also space for all the work in the countryside aimed at protecting the territory with innovative and sustainable systems. These initiatives are declined in compliance with integrated defense lines, in the replacement of synthetic chemical products in the vineyard with alternative practices of an agronomic or biological nature.
For the sustainable management of the vineyards Cantine di Verona also makes use of new technologies, such as the meteorological huts that collect interesting and useful data for viticultural management, and of forecasting models to prevent the main fungal diseases of the vine. The agro-meteorological bulletins are shared weekly, making the results of the monitoring available with the members.
