Fiaker in Salzburg: Incredible 100,000 euros in road damage annually VGT
Traffic jams, horse manure, suffering animals and estimated road damage in the six-figure range – many Salzburg residents have had enough of conditions like in the Middle Ages.
In 2023, the contract with the cabs is to be extended by another five years. That means another half a million in taxpayers’ money will be wasted over the next few years on the resulting road damage. This medieval madness must be stopped! When will the local council finally act and ban the fiakerei – as has already happened in so many other cities around the world? Does Salzburg always have to be at the bottom when it comes to animal welfare, innovation and progress?

Salzburg – The annual damage to the road surface caused by horses’ hooves in the pedestrian zone alone is said to amount to an unbelievable 100,000 euros – paid for by the tax money of the people of Salzburg, who for the most part do not use the carriages themselves.
In addition, there is the additional traffic jam caused by the carriages in the city center, which is already prone to traffic jams anyway, as well as the horse droppings, which are often not cleaned up and which one can often watch for days being flattened.
Even the horses suffering in the city will no longer have to be in 2022. Horses are sensible flight animals that are exposed to great stress in the noise and traffic of the city. You have to walk on hard asphalt and breathe in the exhaust fumes. This is not species-appropriate, especially considering that horses would normally graze for up to 16 hours a day while moving slowly.
For these reasons, more than 18,000 people have already signed a VGT petition for a ban on carriages in Salzburg.
