Hanover has opened the Bruchmeister office, which has been held exclusively by men for 720 years, to all genders. This was decided by the Board of Directors of the Schützenstiftung with a large majority.
Hanover’s Lord Mayor Belit Onay (Greens) had made the push to open the Bruchmeister office. “Opening the Bruchmeisteramt to all genders is another important step on Hanover’s path to becoming a non-discriminatory city,” Onay said on Friday after the Board of Directors’ decision. According to the mayor, traditions thrive on protecting what is worth preserving and taking up new developments.
“Rifle Clubs are open to everyone”
In the course of their history, the shooters have repeatedly reacted to changes in the social framework, said the President of the Association of Hanoverian Shooting Clubs (VHS), Paul-Eric Stolle. Regardless of religious belief, sexual orientation or origin, the shooting clubs are open to everyone. “The opening of the Bruchmeisteramt to people of all genders is also a logical step that we are now taking – all together,” says Stolle.
Opening of the office in dialogue with actual
The deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group, Kerstin Kleber-Politze, explained that the opening up of such a long tradition of dialogue required – and this had already been offered to the clubs, the collegium of former Bruchmeisters and the shooters.
