DFDS relaunches freight service between Calais and Sheerness
DFDS announces the reopening, in the coming weeks, of its freight service between Calais and Sheerness. The line, which opened in July 2021, had been suspended on January 15 following a dispute over the handling of trailers and containers. “A solution has now been found and the connection will be as soon as the new tonnage necessary to operate the service has been identified”, announces the company in a press release. “During this time we continue to provide an alternative unaccompanied freight service from Calais to Dover,”said Wayne Bullen, cargo sales manager at DFDS.
In Calais, Jean-Marc Puissesseau, president of the Société d’exploitation des ports du Détroit, immediately reacted to this announcement, declaring himself “very happy with the outcome of the discussions between the stakeholders”. “We are convinced that the unaccompanied is preparing for good days at the port of Calais and that this line will call for others in the near future”, he added.
The Calais-Sheerness line offers a daily journey that can accommodate up to 165 unaccompanied freight units (driverless trailers or containers). According to DFDS, it has proven popular since its inauguration last summer.
