Voting turnout in the city of Zurich exceptionally high – TOP ONLINE
TELE TOP asked why turnout in Zurich is currently so much higher than in Winterthur:
Christina Stücheli from the Zurich City Chancellery currently has every reason to be happy. The turnout in the city on the Limmat is extraordinarily high. “We are always happy when many people participate in political decisions,” says Christina Stücheli. A completely different picture emerges in the city of Winterthur. So far, only every third voting envelope has arrived at the administration. Compared to Zurich, the turnout in Winterthur is a good 20 percent lower today. “However, we believe that we will achieve a turnout of around 50 percent on Sunday,” says Thomas Bolleter, who is responsible for the elections and votes at the city of Winterthur.
In the past, turnout in the two cities has always been relatively similar. In the last general renewal elections four years ago, it was around 40 percent. The big difference in the current turnout also surprised the political scientist Sarah Bütikofer. “I think the situation in the city of Zurich is simply more exciting for voters,” she says. “A seat will become vacant on the Zurich City Council and it is hard-fought. In Winterthur, all previous candidates will stand again for elections. It’s very unlikely that there will be a surprise.”
