Urban spaces and mobility of the future
Zurich will use the results from the participation in 2021 for the further development of the “Urban Spaces of Zurich” and “City Transport 2025” strategies.
Participation 2021: This is what urban spaces and mobility should look like in the future What could mobility and urban spaces look like in 2050? What wishes and demands do the people of Zurich have? In order to find answers to these questions, the civil engineering office is conducting a broad-based participatory process in 2021.
Sustainable mobility, pleasant and green urban spaces and more participation were the main concerns. How do the people who live, work or visit the city of Zurich imagine urban spaces and mobility in the year 2050? What ideas and wishes do they have and what are the important requirements?
Over 800 responses were received
In order to answer these questions, the civil engineering office will carry out a broad participatory process in 2021 and enter into a dialogue with the various stakeholder groups.
1,200 people took part in online participation in summer 2021, and more than 800 responses were received as part of a playful participation at several locations in the city.
Forum events and workshops were held for representatives of organisations, associations and companies.
Promote sustainable mobility
The promotion of sustainable forms of mobility was a central need: bicycle connections should be safe and continuous, footpaths should be green and shaded.
In addition, more bicycle parking spaces and more seating for passers-by are required. Public transport and efficient logistics systems for commercial deliveries are to be expanded.
In order to create the necessary space, a majority of those responding are in favor of reducing car traffic by 2050 and relieving the districts of through traffic. Exceptions to this should be people who are waiting for a car or craftsmen.
More green, more shade and more water
Measures for climate and environmental protection were considered important in the participation. Desired measures primarily include more greenery, more shade and more water.
In addition, more areas are to be unsealed. Climate protection was seen by the majority as the greatest challenge for Zurich up to 2050.
Liveable urban spaces and opportunities to have a say
Urban spaces should become more pleasant to stay in and invite people to linger, play and do sports in the fresh air. The quarters should offer a high quality of stay.
The need was also expressed to create more “open” spaces that can be used in a variety of ways. And the population should have a say in the design of rooms and be able to take more responsibility for them. There were also calls for the temporary conversion of streets and open spaces.
Future planning and design of mobility and urban spaces
The results provide a picture of the mood and help to align the future planning and design of mobility and urban spaces even more closely with the needs of Zurich residents.
The Civil Engineering Office will incorporate the results into its work and use them to further develop the “Urban Spaces of Zurich” and “City Transport 2025” strategies. Ideas that were in the minority in terms of numbers are also examined.
