Aeronautical training is no exception. The National School of Civil Aviation (Enac) becomes an associate member of the Higher Institute of Aeronautics and Space (ISAE). The latter has three members, Supaéro in Toulouse, Ensma in Poitiers and Supmeca in Paris, and three associate members represented on the board of directors: Estaca in Yvelines; the Air and Space School, which trains military pilots in Salon-de-Provence; and therefore Enac. ISAE excluding Enac brings together 6,500 students, including 4,000 engineering students.
Even if Enac and ISAE-Supaero have neighboring campuses in Toulouse, the two establishments depending respectively on the Ministries of Transport and Defense do not merge. The ISAE group is an association of schools which retain their legal personality.
Enac trains air traffic controllers, technicians and electronics engineers from the General Directorate of Civil Aviation (DGAC), airline pilots, 160 aeronautical engineers and 95 doctoral students per year, not to mention specialized masters, i.e. 1,800 students and 3,500 trainees. She brings her knowledge of air transport to ISAE-Supaero, the world’s leading aerospace engineering school with 1,700 students, including 200 doctoral students.
German competition
This grouping aims to strengthen the schools in the face of international competition. “Higher education is changing with international rankings and it is important that Enac integrates a network that makes it more visible”, recognizes its director general, Olivier Chansou. European and American aviation schools are competing to attract students from India, China and Southern Europe.
“The Technical University of Munich is creating an Aerospace Engineering department funded to the tune of 700 million euros by the Land of Bavaria to become the leader in Europe,” notes Olivier Lesbre, Director General of ISAE. It is therefore important to join forces […] and we want to go further with the research. »
ISAE-Supaero and Enac have already created a research federation with the National Aerospace Research Office (Onera) in 2018 and want to get closer to IRT Saint Exupéry. The schools will jointly design training on aircraft decarbonization and digital teaching materials. ISAE-Supaero has published a reference document on the impact of aviation on the climate and Enac provides additional information on air operations.
