CENTURY REPAIR BEHIND THE DOOR
The next stage of the reconstruction of the Barrandov Bridge is approaching. It will already affect Prague’s traffic. I wonder why the previous management let it go so far? Insulation on each bridge must be replaced after a maximum of 20 years. This has not been the case for almost 40 years, and for years the water has flowed in the most. This will make the reconstruction much more difficult. It’s the same as taking care of your house or cottage. It is necessary to repair the roof or gutter from time to time so that it does not flow into it. It’s no different with bridges.
By flowing into the bridge, the so-called prestressed ropes, which hold the most together, suffer the most. They are sometimes completely interrupted and do not fulfill their function at all, elsewhere only 10%. The most difficult operation will be to strengthen and supplement the ropes so that the Barrandov Bridge can withstand the extreme stress it undergoes on a daily basis for decades to come. The most important bridge in the Czech Republic, which crosses more than 140,000 cars a day, is neglected.
We are facing a repair. We want to prevent misfortune like in Genoa and we do not want to repeat the Troja footbridge. Both of these structures are of a similar nature to the Barrandov Bridge. But there is nothing to fear. We’ve done thorough diagnostics and we know what we’re up to. If we postponed it, the load capacity would have to be reduced or one lane would have to be reduced in the coming years. Not to mention an accident. I don’t want to allow that.
Barrandov Bridge is an irreplaceable artery. Therefore, for the first time in the history of the city, the public contract was set so that the time of reconstruction had the same weight as the price. TSK Praha engineers have been preparing, modeling and looking for the best possible solution for three years. They did an amazing job and I am proud of all my colleagues. In any case, we cannot lie that the repair will not bring traffic complications. Given the condition of the bridge, we must all be lenient.
I will not lie. It will be challenging but manageable. We pressed the construction time to the most necessary technological minimum. The contractor will follow the exact computer models and before we hope, we will have another stage in a few months. In the coming weeks, we will inform you about every detail – the winners of the public contract, the exact detour routes and specific capacities. We have a lot up our sleeve.
