Health – Hanover – Thousands of vaccine doses destroyed in Lower Saxony – Health
Hanover (dpa / lni) – Thousands of corona vaccine doses have been destroyed in Lower Saxony in the past few weeks due to insufficient demand. This was the result of a survey by the German Press Agency, in which a total of 30 districts and independent cities took part. Only six of the municipalities said they have not yet eliminated any vaccine. As explained by several municipalities, the vaccine loses its shelf life after a few weeks and then has to be disposed of.
According to a spokeswoman, a total of 5,000 cans could be destroyed in the Lüneburg district in January. The district of Osterholz speaks of 3600 cans. The city of Osnabrück reported about 100 bottles of Moderna that had to be disposed of, which corresponds to up to 2000 doses for booster vaccinations. Several municipalities stated that some vaccines had to be disposed of, but did not give any specific figures.
The number of daily corona vaccinations in Lower Saxony has fallen significantly in recent weeks. Last Thursday, for example, there were around 29,000, according to a spokesman for the Ministry of Health. In December, the state sometimes granted more than 100,000 vaccinations per day.
According to data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), around 58 percent of people in the state have received a third vaccination against the corona virus. According to the information, around 75 percent have been vaccinated twice, around 78 percent once.
