A4 Henggart: Escaping driver arrested after accident
Shortly before 4 p.m., a police patrol on the A1 near Winterthur-Töss asked a driver to exit the motorway using the “Police – Please follow” matrix light. The driver resisted this request and accelerated his vehicle massively. He drove at high speed and with dangerous overtaking maneuvers in the direction of St. Gallen and at the Winterthur-Nord junction in the direction of Schaffhausen. Shortly before the Henggart exit, the fugitive caused two collisions with uninvolved vehicles and briefly came to a standstill in the Lotterbuck tunnel. Immediately afterwards, the driver drove off again, but was stopped by a patrol from the Zurich cantonal police, while they braked the getaway vehicle with the company car. Both vehicles were damaged. The driver who fled, a 63-year-old Swiss, was arrested at the scene of the accident. During the arrest, a police officer suffered a minor injury to his hand. The A4 in the direction of Schaffhausen had to be temporarily closed.
The arrested man was taken to a police station for questioning. According to initial findings, he does not have a driver’s license and will have to answer for a speeding offense, among other things. The competent public prosecutor’s office in Winterthur/Unterland ordered blood and urine samples to be taken from him and his vehicle was seized.
