Highlights of the year from Denmark – Extraavisen
Cycling Nation Denmark: From 01.-03.July 2022, the world’s largest cycling race, the Tour de France, will visit Denmark. The large sports event and the small flat country fit together perfectly: In Denmark, cycling is part of everyday life, it is part of the country’s DNA. There are 12,000 km of cycle paths and trails across the country. In the capital Copenhagen alone, the inhabitants cycle around 1,440,000 km every day – a distance equivalent to 400 editions of the Tour de France. With 673,000 bicycles in the city and the fact that 44% of all travel to work and school takes place by bicycle, it is no wonder that Copenhagen is considered the most bicycle-friendly city in the world. 2022 has been served as the year of cycling in Denmark, 400 million has been set aside for new efforts on cycling infrastructure, where the national cycling routes must be prioritized.
The Grand Départ of the Tour de France starts in Copenhagen on 1 July. Then follow further day stages from Zealand to Funen (Roskilde> Nyborg (199 km) and through southern Jutland (Vejle> Sønderborg (182 km).

New hotels open in Copenhagen: Good news from the hotel scene in Copenhagen. In March, Scandic opens its largest hotel to date, Scandic Spectrum, with specialty restaurants, a sky bar and a 25-meter swimming pool. In June, Scandic Nørreport will welcome you to a cozy 100-room hotel, from the roof terrace, the sky bar and the restaurant you will have magnificent views of the city center. 25 hours Hotel Round Tower opens in the inner city right next to the iconic Round Tower in March. The hotel offers 243 rooms, a restaurant, a bar and a patisserie. In the Østerbro district, the new Villa Canada will allow auditors to book the entire former Canadian embassy for parties or a stay in extreme luxury.
REGAN VEST – New underground museum from the Cold Warn :. Deep inside Rold Skov in North Jutland, 200 feet below the surface, is one of Denmark’s best homes. The Cold War Bunker REGAN Vest, built in the 1960s. In 2022, it will open to the public, as a museum, designed to shape the history of its time. The nuclear-safe bunker was built to protect the Danish government and the royal family in the event of a third world war. The bunker is to be opened to the public for the first time in 2022. The facility is part of a new museum with various exhibitions both above and below the hill.
Fårup Sommerland starts the season with new attractions – Phoenix: With a height of 40 meters, a length of 905 meters and a top speed of 95 kilometers in time, this will be the longest and fastest roller coaster in Denmark. I add to the world’s first «stall loop» element, which allows roller-coaster enthusiasts to experience 2.5 seconds of weightlessness, Phoenix also has the most «airtime» (a combination of 9.2 seconds of weightlessness and negative g ) forces) of all roller coasters in Scandinavia.
FLIGHT: New museum tells incredible stories about the refugees in Denmark. From 1945-49, Oksbøl in Southern Jutland housed the largest refugee camp in Denmark. FLIGHT Danish Refugee Museum, which opens our 2022, will dive into the incredible and thought-provoking stories and lives of the refugees. The renowned Danish architects Bjarke Ingels Group, BIG, are behind the rebuilding of the building, which previously housed German refugees after World War II. The museum tells stories from the German refugees in 1945, as well as the Vietnamese, Bosnian and Syrian refugees who have come to Denmark in recent years.
STEVNS KLINT – New visitor center on mass extinction of dinosaurs: On the southeast coast of Zealand the cliffs lie by Stevns Klint. This natural phenomenon, formed by chalk and limestone, is on the UNESCO World Heritage List and in 2022 will open a new visitor center. This interactive exhibit tells the story of the mass extinction of dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Visitors can also search for fossils on their own on the 17-kilometer-long beach at the bottom of the cliff.
Reopening of Designmuseum Denmark: After an extensive restoration of the historic museum building will Design Museum Denmark in Copenhagen celebrate the reopening in June 2022. The museum’s permanent exhibition includes objects by well-known Danish designers from different eras, such as Arne Jacobsen, Poul Henningsen, Kaare Klint and Jacob Jensen, as well as a large collection of historical European and Asian works. Highlights include the iconic chairs The Swan and the Egg – by Arne Jacobsen. The museum also collects the furniture index, founded by Marilyn Arnold Palley and Reese Palley, a digital with information and pictures of over 10,000 Danish furniture from the 20th and 21st centuries. Another collection includes Danish and international textiles and clothing. For those who want to immerse themselves even more: The museum houses the largest publicly available special library for design and applied art in Scandinavia.
Dinosaurland new theme area in Djurs Sommerland: Djurs Sommerland east of Jutland opens on 30 April with the new theme area – Dinosaurland. 25 life-size dinosaurs are scattered throughout the forest. Discover three new attractions, including the 400-foot Family T-Rex Family Coaster. Children can even try themselves as an archaeologist and dig for dinosaur bones in the area.
Overnight with the tigers: Knuthenborg Safari Park is Northern Europe’s largest safari park with over a thousand animals representing approximately 32 different species. From the spring of 2022, the park will offer an exciting opportunity to spend the night in Camp Zov Tigra, located in Europe’s largest tiger forest. With just a window between you and the tigers, you will gain unique insight into how these beautiful predators live on their natural terms, which highlights the strong focus the Tiger Forest has on animal welfare. The music festival returns: 2022 is expected to be the year the festival makes a comeback for full. Aarhus wants to pay tribute to the music and culture after the pandemic and has named the city the city of music 2022. The big music corps will be kicked off on March 26 with a big opening concert. ENIGMA – The Communication Museum opens in Copenhagen: ENIGMA is a new, interactive museum for communication which opens in the district Østerbro in Copenhagen in the late summer of 2022. The museum has grown from the former Post and Telegraph Museum, which was closed in 2015. The new museum tells stories from themes such as surveillance, digital communication and fake news. In the four opening exhibitions, part focuses on the aspect of communication in times of crisis and other knowledge-based innovation and creativity based on communication. The “Arcade Collection” shows digital gaming and a real arcade. The children’s area is a playground for the youngest, with various digital screens to discover.
