New obstacles from Vienna to trucks at Brenner on Saturday
Austria places more and more obstacles to the crossing of Tyrol by industrial vehicles, the last of which the Government of Tyrol announced on February 2: it is the extension of the Saturday driving ban from 7.00 to 15.00, which will enter into force on 5 February and will last until 5 March 2022. Adding this timetable extension to the night and holiday ban, already in force, this means that on the weekends of February trucks will only be able to travel on the Brenner axis from 5.00 to 7.00 on Saturday morning, to resume at 5.00 on Monday.
Anita immediately rose against this provision: “It is one yet another restrictive measure by the Tyrolean government which has nothing to do with environmental protection and road safety as it will necessarily lead to congestion of road traffic in the two hours in which it is possible to circulate in that section and on Monday morning, at the end of the prohibitions: situations that then they make the metering system with kilometric columns in the Bavarian territory ”, explains President Thomas Baumgartner.
He goes on to state that “we cannot accept passively the position taken by the Tyrolean government both for the social problems it generates for our drivers, and for the serious damage it generates to the Italian economy “. Baumgartner therefore asks the Government to “intervene urgently and firmly on the European Commission to put an end to this and all other restrictive measures unilaterally imposed by the Tyrolean Government, contrary to the principle of free movement of goods in European territory”.
In recent days, the Brenner Pass has been at the center of another Italian road haulage intervention, which concerns the declarations of the president of Bavaria, Markus Söder, in favor of a significant increase in truck tolls, thus aligning himself with Austria and the Autonomous Province of Bolzano. The president of Conftrasporto, Paolo Uggè, intervened on the subject and called for an urgent intervention by the Government.
“It is time to tackle the problem of tolls at crossings and it is it is essential that this be done at European level, finding a unitary solution that puts an end to the imbalance between the markets of the countries of the same Union ”, says Uggè. “Years have gone by without anything being resolved. In the meantime, our country, from production companies to transport companies, has been harassed with increasingly strict bans and considerable time wasters “. And he concludes: “Whether you consider harmonizing tolls on all crossings or think of other solutions, do it at a European level, considering that no EU country should be at a disadvantage compared to the others”.
