Stora Enso is planning an investment of USD 44.6 million at a site in Skutskär, Sweden
The Finnish pulp and paper manufacturer Stora Enso has revealed plans to invest EUR 40 million (USD 44.6 million) in its fluff pulp production facility in Skutskär, Sweden.
The company will invest in new technology and in restructuring the facility in order to increase cost efficiency and improve the site’s climate footprint.
Project work will begin during the first quarter of this year, and the upgraded bleaching plant is expected to be operational during the second quarter of next year.
Stora Enso will begin decommissioning and closing the obsolete bleach line by the second quarter of 2024.
The company will reduce the number of bleaching lines at the plant from three to two in an attempt to increase cost competitiveness and create future development opportunities.
Johanna Hagelberg, Deputy CEO of Stora Enso’s biomaterials division, said: “Both with our products and in our operations, we strive for maximum performance with minimal impact on the environment.

“Our Skutskärsanläggning is already close to carbon neutral and through this investment we are now taking the next important step towards a climate-positive contribution.
“In addition, investment in technology upgrades will further strengthen our competitiveness in the growing hygiene products sector.”
The investment in new bleaching technology supports Stora Enso’s ambitious climate goals and is intended to improve both the site’s operational efficiency and its carbon footprint performance.
The move is in line with the company’s goal of providing “regenerative” solutions.
At Skutskär’s facility, hygiene products such as baby diapers, women’s care and incontinence protection for adults are manufactured.
Stora Enso, which also produces fluff pulp in Europe, is committed to halving its total greenhouse gas emissions from operations by 2030.
In November last year, the company added a sustainable packaging solution to its Trayforma range of ready meals.
The Trayforma PET34 product has less than 10% polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic content and can withstand temperatures up to 220 ° C.
