The amount of mixed and sorted waste increased slightly in Prague last year
Last year, the Prague city company Pražské služby (PSAS) collected 260,547 tons of mixed waste. About 3,000 tons more than a year before informed company spokesman Radim Mana. Last year, Prague residents dumped 68,124 tons of sorted waste, ie 3,500 tons more than in 2020 and the most in the last five years. Last year, a waste incinerator in Malešice complicated waste processing, and two of the four lines, according to the spokesman, are being repaired by the end of this year. Since this year, the city has also raised prices for the collection of most households.
mixed waste in Prague The amount has been growing for several years, compared to 2017 it increased by about 10,000 tons last year. The amount of sorted waste is also growing, the amount of which has increased by 14,000 tons since the same year. Last year, the people of Prague threw 24,729 tons of paper, 16,039 tons of plastic and 19,047 tons of glass into colored containers. “In addition, the amount of separated beverage cartons, metal packaging and biowaste is growing. The Prague residents handed it a record 6435 tons to brown containers,” Mana added.
The city has been offering brown containers for bio-waste since 2020, and the company has registered over 11,000 tons of waste in two years of operation. From this year, its exhibition is free. “This has caused considerable interest from the inhabitants of the metropolis. More than 5,200 new applications have been registered since January 2022,” the spokesman said. So far, there have been about 18,000 brown garbage cans in the metropolis. According to the company, there are 122,000 garbage cans and containers for mixed waste, and there are about 24,300 containers for sorted waste.
Most of the waste in the metropolis is incinerated by the incinerator in Malešice (ZEVO), in which the city began to gradually replace all four boilers in 2018. Originally, the reconstruction was to be completed this spring, but during the replacement of the last of the lines, a fire broke out last October, which seriously damaged two boilers. Therefore, the plant must now malfunction and the company transports part of the waste to the incinerator near Pilsen. “In the year, we processed 282,740 tons of waste at ZEVO Energy. This is about 500 tons less than in the previous year. The reason for the decline is the fire just mentioned,” added Mana.
At the end of last year, the Prague City Council approved new waste ordinances, according to which most Praguers have been paying for waste collection since this year. The change in the collection price collection was necessary due to the new law. Prices have increased for larger containers with more frequent collection, while the smallest ones will save people. Opposition ODS and YES criticized the city leadership for the modifications.
PSAS provides waste collection and treatment for about two thirds of the metropolis. Since 2018, it has been the only city owned by the Prague company, when it has displaced a small shareholder through a so-called squeez-out. The rest of the waste collection in Prague is provided, for example, by AVE CZ, entrepreneur Daniel Křetínský and other companies.
