A Georgian public defender visits Strasbourg – Civil.ge
Georgian public defender Nino Lomjaria is to visit Strasbourg from 25 to 27 January to meet with heads of various Council of Europe bodies and human rights defenders, discuss the rights situation in Georgia regarding the judiciary, media environment and equality .
She has already met Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatović, President of the Venice Commission Claire Bazy Malaurie and Executive Secretary of the European Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) Régis Brillat.
During the meeting with Commissioner Mijatović on January 25, the Public Defender stress the importance of support from Council of Europe officials for human rights defenders and journalists in Georgia. The Public Defender’s Office said these groups of people “have come under particular pressure and attack in recent years.”
Lomjaria also discussed the disbanding of the state inspector service by the parliament led by the Georgian dream and the public defender. appeal to the Constitutional Court declare the decision unconstitutional.
According to the same report, she also spoke of the need for human rights monitoring in Russian-occupied Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia.
On January 26, Ombudsman Lomjaria and the newly elected President of the Venice Commission, Claire Bazy Malaurie discussed challenges faced by the Public Defender’s Office and other independent human rights institutions in Georgia.
Also on January 26, the public defender informed the CPT’s Executive Secretary on the problems of closed institutions in Georgia, as well as on the activities of the medical council she set up to monitor the health of imprisoned ex-President Mikheil Saakashvili.
The Public Defender also referred to the situation of detainees in Abkhazia and in the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia and asked the Committee to include in its agenda the monitoring of closed establishments in the occupied regions.
The public defender is also due to meet with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe Marija Pejčinović Burić and the President of the European Court of Human Rights Róbert Spanó.
