15 drivers out of 59 had their mobile phone in hand
“Cellphones while driving are an addiction”, still lamented Paul Hammelmann, President of Road Safety, last November, on the occasion of a campaign broadcast in connection with the Ministry of Mobility about respect on the road. And on Wednesday, between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., eleven police officers and six customs officers were able to measure it during a major road check on the N7, near the Lorentzweiler roundabout.
Out of 59 cars checked, “15 drivers must be required for having used/handled their mobile phone while driving”, indicating the police. Almost one in four, therefore, in a rather short slot. Each was fined up to 145 euros in addition to a withdrawal of two points on the driving license. Remember that the use of mobile phones while driving will soon be penalized with a loss of four points.
Other offenses in addition
The Ministry of Mobility had already castigated the too many accidents caused by “inattention” at the wheel, itself due in large part to the use of the smartphone. While the number of serious and fatal accidents has decreased over 20 years in Luxembourg, those caused by a lack of attention have remained at a high level since 2013, with peaks of 209 in 2015 and 206 in 2019.
On Wednesday, between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m., other offenses were noted such as defective lighting, illegible license plates, five motorists had not buckled their seat belts correctly, seven did not have a valid technical control, eleven had not paid vehicle tax… A car was also confiscated by order of the public prosecutor’s office because it was not insured.
