Toulouse: after the death of a pedestrian, the questions that arise on a “delicate” intersection
A 52-year-old woman, well known in Blagnac, died after being run over by a motorist on Monday January 24 in Toulouse.
There are dozens of crossroads like these in Toulouse. But not required with a steeply sloping street – rue Félix Lavit, from where the motorist descended – and garbage containers that hide, until the last moment, the pedestrian crossing. Monday, January 24, it is 8:15 a.m. when the tragedy occurs.
Anne Larroque, a 52-year-old woman from Blagnac, is about to cross Avenue Georges-Pompidou, between the Marengo media library and Jolimont. A motorist coming down from the small rue Lavit turns right. The broken “give way” line is drawn on the ground. Has he slowed down? Simply looked to the left that no car was coming, without paying attention to the pedestrian crossing, on which the victim was? Was he blinded by the sun? Did the garbage containers block his view? According to our information, he reportedly told the police that he “did not see” the victim.
The shock will in any case leave him no chance. According to a testimony collected on Wednesday, she was bleeding in the head when the emergency services intervened.
“I arrived at 8:30 a.m. at my work, and it just happened, explains an employee of the insurance broker, just opposite the scene of the tragedy. The lady was lying on the road. The witness shows the sand which was deposited by the emergency services to erase the traces of blood.
“This intersection is tricky and unsafe for pedestrians”
There have been no recent accidents at this place of local residents’ memory, but everyone agrees that “things go fast in the area”. Moreover, an educational radar is installed on the other side of the roadway of the avenue Pompidou. Further up towards Jolimont, a new generation radar – which distributes tickets, this one – is in the test phase.
“This crossroads is still tricky. Already, the red light is placed after the pedestrian crossing. It is never reassuring for those who cross. We are never really sure that the cars will stop when we see them coming,” says Jimmy, a local resident.
Anne Larroque, 52 since the start of the year, was well known in Blagnac, where she was the owner of the Center pharmacy for a long time, near the town hall. She came to sell it in November to set up as an herbalist and run a wellness center in Blagnac for two months. His death caused very strong emotion in Blagnac.
