Memorial Day: the program of initiatives in Pisa
To celebrate the anniversary, the Municipality and the Prefecture of Pisa, in collaboration with the Jewish Community of Pisa, have organized a significant program of initiatives. “Since 2000 – declares Deputy Mayor Raffaella Bonsague – the Italian Republic recognizes January 27,” Day of Remembrance “, the date on which the gates of Auschwitz were opened, to commemorate the Shoah, the extermination of the Jewish people, the racial laws, the imprisonment, the death of many innocent people.
On the morning of the 27th, we will put up a commemorative banner at Palazzo Gambacorti, a place that represents the city and its government, followed by a series of initiatives to not forget the victims of the Shoah. Last year we named a public space after Anna Frank, a roundabout between the Aurelia and via delle Cascine, an initiative strongly desired and necessary not only towards the Jewish community but towards all Pisan citizens. Seventy-seven years ago the opening of the gates of the Auschwitz concentration camp revealed to the world the horror of the extermination of innocent women, men and children. To prevent tragedies of this magnitude from happening again, it is up to everyone, institutions and citizens to pause, reflect and remember the past for a better future for our country and for Europe. The pain of genocide, a sad page in human history, is still alive in us and can never be forgotten ».
