The capital has long supported active city districts, which are preparing infrastructure projects for sustainable mobility on their territory. Among the currently approved projects, a total of 11 events are ready for immediate status, and two city districts have been awarded subsidies for the preparation of project documentation with expected implementation in the coming years.
“By supporting active transport, we are fulfilling what we promised Praguers when approving the Sustainable Mobility Plan of May 2019. Long-term support for cycling and walking has positive effects on the environment and the health of locals, and Prague is trying to go against it. The supported projects represent a safe and comfortable infrastructure suitable for everyday commuting and weekend recreation. Active city districts are important for city development. We are therefore happy to support them when they have projects ready, “said the Deputy Mayor of Prague. m Prague for transport Adam Scheinherr.
The key investor investment is the construction and reconstruction of two footbridges across Opatovská Street in the South Town. The so-called Otík footbridge, famous in the cult film Vesničko má středisková, should be completely reconstructed on the basis of a project prepared by the Prague 11 district. It connects directly to the eastern vestibule of the Háje metro station and is used daily by thousands of people transferring from the metro to connecting bus connections, as well as by local residents who want to safely secure the busy Opatovská street. The footbridge has been in a very bad condition for a long time and without reconstruction there would be a risk of its closure.
A completely new footbridge will then be created across Opatovská Street between the polyclinic and the cultural house on the site of the previously demolished footbridge. The locals will once again see the secure connection that they have lacked here since the demolition of the original structure.
Other events will support, for example, the section of the city-wide important A8 railway in Prague 14 connecting Žižkov with the city east or the A12 backbone in the Dalejské údolí. Prague has also been cooperating with this city district for a long time on the restoration of the historic Via Sancta pilgrimage route between Prague and Stará Boleslav.
With this support, the metropolis continues its long-term strategy of comprehensive support for sustainable transport infrastructure in accordance with approved concept documents. The condition is that the projects are ready to start implementation. Since 2019, almost 100 borough projects have been removed in this way. In addition to paths for pedestrians and cyclists, with an emphasis on ensuring quality connections, these included projects for the modernization of railway infrastructure or the construction of P + R car parks.
