The Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry is located on the Viikki campus. The mission of the faculty is to promote the sustainable use of renewable natural resources through scientific research and research-based teaching. The Department of Agricultural Sciences is one of the units of the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry. The department conducts internationally acclaimed research in agricultural sciences and the bioeconomy and provides high-quality education based on research. The aim is to conduct research and education in crop and livestock production, animal production and related technologies and environmental impacts, and to produce social impacts through research. The main research areas of the department are agricultural engineering, zoology, plant production sciences, and earth and environmental sciences. Plant pathology belongs to the field of plant production sciences, and at least basic knowledge of plant cultivation systems is required to be successful. The department has about 100 employees and offers BSc and MSc studies. The department is socially active and cooperates strongly with companies, government agencies, research institutes and other universities nationally and internationally.

AUXILIARY SYSTEM / AUXILIARY SYSTEM / PROFESSOR OF PLANT PATHOLOGY
From 1.8.2022 or by agreement. The position may be filled as an assistant professor, tenure track assistant professor or full professor, depending on the applicant’s merits and career stage.
The tenure track assistant / assistant professor or full professor teaches and conducts plant pathology research in collaboration with faculty researchers in microbiology and forest pathology and other actors in the field. Knowledge of the northern agriculture and food chain is considered an asset. The candidate will be expected to provide high-quality research on plant diseases of particular agricultural importance in one or more of the following areas of research:
- mechanisms of virulence of pathogens and defense mechanisms of host plants
- epidemiology of plant diseases
- identification and diagnosis of plant diseases
- control of plant diseases by ecologically sustainable methods
- effects of environmental, cultivation and storage conditions on plant diseases
Tenure track assistant / assistant professor or full professor teaches plant pathology in the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Agricultural Sciences and participates in the teaching of the Master’s program in Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology, depending on the competence profile chosen (https: //www.helsinki.fi/fi/haku-ja-koulutus/hae-kandidaatteja-ja -…). STANDARD
The tenure track system appointed for the position of assistant professor or assistant professor shall have:
- doctoral degree
- ability to work independently
- the teaching skills required for the task
- ability and motivation for an academic career, as publications and other means show
The person appointed to the position of professor must have
- doctoral degree
- high level academic qualifications
- experience in conducting scientific research
- the ability to provide research-based instruction and to supervise dissertations and theses
- evidence of international cooperation in the field of research they represent
- academic leadership skills
In assessing the qualifications of candidates, attention must be paid to the merits of science and teaching. In addition, the candidates’ leadership and interaction skills as well as activity in the scientific community and publicity are taken into account.
Scientific merits include e.g.
- scientific publications and other research results of academic value
- success in obtaining external research funding
- international research experience
- international elections
Teaching merits include e.g.
- teaching experience
- pedagogical training
- ability to produce learning materials
- other teaching merits
- teaching presentation (if necessary)
- participation in doctoral training
Successful completion of this task requires a good command of English.
According to the Government Decree, the professor and assistant professor must be proficient in the Finnish language. They must also have at least satisfactory oral and written proficiency in Swedish. A foreign citizen, a foreign Finnish citizen or a citizen who has not received education in Finnish or Swedish may be exempted from this requirement without a separate application. If the nominee does not have proficiency in Finnish or Swedish, he or she must acquire sufficient proficiency in the Finnish language within a reasonable time. The university supports the nominee in acquiring the necessary Finnish language skills.
WHAT WE OFFER

The professor’s salary is based on levels 8–10 of the working conditions of the teaching and research staff of the Finnish university’s remuneration system and level 7 of the assistant professor’s. The gross annual salary of a professor varies between EUR 70,000 and EUR 96,000 and that of an assistant professor between EUR 55,000 and EUR 72,000, depending on the qualifications and experience of the person to be appointed.
