Mantl: “My goal is to be number 1 in Salzburg”
A year ago, goalkeeper Nico Mantl switched from third division club SpVgg Unterhaching to RB Salzburg for two million euros. The German U-21 international is currently only on the bench. However, he does not think about giving up – on the contrary.

Most recently, Philipp Köhn guarded the goal at RB Salzburg, FC Bayern’s round of 16 opponents in the Champions League, and enjoyed the trust of German coach Matthias Jaissle.
Only played one game so far
However, experts certify Köhn not the best performance in the first half of the season, Jaissle is also fueling the competition in preparation for the second half of the season, has not officially committed himself. “My goal is to be number 1 here in Salzburg,” says Mantl, emphasizing: “I accepted the competition here from the start, developed further and know what I can do. My teammates know that too.” However, Mantl has only played one game in the Austrian league for the leaders this season.
Despite various requests, Mantl does not think of a change due to the current reserve role, he could become number 1 in goal for a longer time. “I’ve felt very comfortable here since my move. The club and the environment are perfect for my further development,” he says.
If, like me, you give 100 percent in every training session, then of course you want to play.
It speaks of self-confidence and conviction to grab it, as bare as possible. Preferably in the second half of the season and thus also in the duels with FC Bayern, which could become a big stage for Mantl. “If, like me, you give 100 percent in every training session, then of course you want to play. I’ll continue to present myself to the coaching team as capable,” he promises.
While the number of regular German goalkeepers in the Bundesliga has decreased in recent years, the Bavarian wants to pack it in neighboring Austria.
