- The Swedish goalkeeper will cancel his loan period to Sheffield United
- Olsen is expected to provide strong competition for Emiliano Martinez
Aston Villa expect to complete the loan signing of Roma goalkeeper Robin Olsen after a medical examination on Tuesday.
The Swedish national team player will cancel his loan to Sheffield United, which is discussing a deal for Frank Fielding from Stoke City.
Villa is still also interested in recruiting Brighton’s Yves Bissouma this window. The Mali international is valued at 50 million pounds.
Sweden goalkeeper Robin Olsen is approaching a loan to Aston Villa this week
But Gerrard may have to wait until the summer to sign the midfielder, who is currently representing Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon.
Bissouma will have only 12 months left on his contract at Amex at the end of the season and that will represent the last chance that Graham Potter’s team can secure a large transfer fee.
However, Gerrard may also need to fight the interest from Liverpool and Arsenal for the defensive midfielder.
Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard continues to build an impressive side at Villa Park
At the same time, Olsen, formerly of Everton, would not be seen as a direct replacement for Emiliano Martinez, although it is expected to provide reasonable competition for Villa No 1.
Although the move will make him command fewer first-team chances than at Bramall Lane, he is seen as an important part of Villa’s rebuilding under Gerrard.
Olsen’s merits as a Swedish national team player with experience will probably also see him as a significant upgrade to the current reserve house guards Jed Steer and Viljami Sinisalo.
